«A Man Called Ove» is the debut novel by Swedish author Fredrik Backman. The novel was first published in 2012 and translated into Ukrainian in 2018. The main character, Ove, is a grumpy 59-year-old Swede who lives with his wife Sonja in a residential complex. He strictly follows all the rules, which doesn’t make him popular among his neighbors. He is skilled at manual labor, drives, and repairs cars well. His greatest pride is that he has only ever driven a Saab. The story is disrupted by a family that moves into the neighboring house. Not just two daughters, but also their chatty mother Parvaneh and completely inept father Patrick burst into Ove’s life. Throughout the narrative, Ove recalls his childhood, the loss of his parents, and how he met his wife. It also becomes clear that many years ago, Ove’s wife was in an accident that resulted in the loss of their child, leaving her in a wheelchair. Since Sonja passed away shortly before the story begins, and Ove lost the only person who truly understood him, he wants to end his life. However, all attempts fail, and Ove finally shows an unexpectedly humane side. Because his sworn enemy Rune suffers from Alzheimer’s disease, the city council wants to send him to a nursing home. His wife Anita cannot fight this decision alone. Now Ove displays a fighting spirit and, along with the neighboring family that has become his friends, helps ensure that Rune can stay with his wife.
