An ordinary city in the «happy Austria,» where people live, suffer, fall in love, engage with science and charlatan performances by world-renowned illusionists, entertain themselves at balls and carnivals, stroll, and hide secrets in carved chests. Against the backdrop of an era that will increasingly become mythologized about idyllic life, the fates of two women intertwine as closely as the trunks of trees — in an inseparable bond that neither allows them to live nor breathe, nor stay nor leave.
