Sweet Darusia by Maria Matios is one of the most significant novels in Ukrainian literature of the independence period. The book received high praise in France, where it was published by the prestigious publisher Gallimard. A French critic called it a true gem, noting Maria Matios’s powerful poetic style and her confident storytelling, reminiscent of a grand ancient tragedy.
The novel has been translated into many languages, including German, English, French, Italian, and Polish.
Set in the 1970s in Ukraine, the story follows Darusia Ilashchuk, a mentally ill woman living in the village of Cheremoshne in Bukovina. Locals call her “Sweet Darusia.” They believe she lost her sanity long ago: she does not speak and often suffers from headaches. Darusia lives in isolation. A childhood tragedy left a deep mark on her, one she could not overcome. Her survival through hunger and cold is ensured only by her father’s house and the kindness of the villagers. Although people are used to Darusia and understand the reasons for her condition, they still feel fear — either of her or of their own guilt. Social prejudice, envy, and fear have contributed to her misfortune.
