«Aliye, Alena, and I. From our names, written in a line or a column, one can study the history of Crimea.» Long before the annexation of Crimea, she realized she was a Ukrainian. Neither her grandfather, a KGB lieutenant colonel, nor the Russian blood in her veins could change that. A childhood friendship with a Crimean Tatar girl and an introduction to this culture became the seed that would later grow into a search for herself and her own national identity.
The novel intertwines Crimean Tatar culture, Ukrainian literature, and family secrets. Together with the main character and her friends, Crimean Tatar Aliye and Ukrainian Alena, the reader journeys from the girls’ childhood to the annexation of Crimea by Russia.
Among the Crimeans, there is a saying: «There is no land beyond Perekop,» implying that whatever happens on the mainland is of no concern. Anastasia Levkova’s novel shows that land exists on both sides of Perekop. It just needs to be understood and stitched together — opening the mainland to Crimea and Crimea to the mainland.
