I first began to reflect on how self-confidence affects the quality of service in a small café in my childhood town. Behind the counter worked two young baristas. One had a queue of customers; the other — none. I was sipping my cappuccino when I suddenly realized that I, too, had chosen to buy coffee from the first girl. Most likely, other visitors were subconsciously drawn to her as well, willing to wait in line.

Why? Just a few minutes of observation were enough to understand: she radiated confidence and positivity. The other girl, by contrast, seemed to say with her entire demeanor: “I feel uncomfortable, I’m afraid of you, and I’d rather you didn’t notice me.” And people didn’t notice her, while her colleague smiled, chatted warmly, made coffee, and received tips. Perhaps the second girl also loves her job and cares about people, but she dislikes herself so deeply that — if not repelling — she certainly doesn’t attract guests.

My book is a guide for people like her. As you move through each chapter with me — climbing them like steps toward success — you will develop not only confident behavior but also the inner state to match. It’s deep and sometimes difficult work, but once you’ve done it, you’ll be able to serve guests with ease and pleasure. Your life will change beyond work as well. Worthy people and good events will begin to gravitate toward you, and you yourself will start to enjoy your work, your conversations, and life as a whole.
