The Shadow of the Object: Psychoanalysis by Christopher Bollas is a thoughtful and exquisitely written book that will be of interest not only to psychoanalysts and other mental health professionals (though primarily, of course, to them), but also to cultural theorists, literary scholars, art historians, and any reader intrigued by the deep nature of human thoughts, actions, and experiences. Combining aspects of Freud’s theory of unconscious thinking with ideas from the British school of object relations, Bollas develops the concept of the unthought known — the earliest existential experience of interaction between the infant’s innate structure and the mother-as-environment, traces of which can be observed in individual moods, in moments of aesthetic or mystical enchantment, in the theatre of dreaming, and in a person’s attitude toward their own self as an object.
The unthought known is that which we always “know,” but have never had the opportunity to think. The psychoanalytic relationship allows this to happen — at least in part — thereby opening the possibility of transformation.
